Kalu: Collaborative Approach Needed In Crafting Constitution

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has stressed the importance of government officials working collaboratively and conscientiously to deliver a strengthened constitution for the nation’s benefit.

Kalu delivered his message on Monday during a retreat held in Abuja, specifically organized for senior legislative aides under his office.He acknowledged that a superior constitution is fundamental to enabling the flourishing of democracy in Nigeria.

He explained that the Office of the Deputy Speaker will serve as a central hub for addressing concerns related to constitutional amendments through thorough research and needs assessment of the Nigerian populace.

Kalu, serving as both the Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review and Deputy Speaker, affirmed the parliament’s commitment to collaborating with pertinent stakeholders in amending the relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution for the nation’s benefit.

He said, “Let us all work hard to get a good constitution for our beloved country. This is a task for us all, government officials and indeed, all Nigerians.

“As aides, you must continue to uphold our standards in administering the office. Efficiency, professionalism, and ethical considerations should guide our interactions and decision-making process. You are not only custodians of my office but also ambassadors of our nation’s democratic values.

“An essential aspect of your duties lies in economic advisory. We are tasked with dealing with complex issues surrounding projects and budgets. This duty requires an in-depth understanding of our national economy, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to promoting sustainable economic growth.

“In the realm of politics, you interface with the political aspects of the office.

“This role requires navigating the complex interplay of political interests and alliances while always keeping the nation’s best interest at heart.”

In his remarks, Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk to the National Assembly, emphasized the crucial role of collaboration between legislative aides and their principals, emphasizing that teamwork is indispensable for achieving organizational goals.

Also addressing the audience, Toby Okechukwu, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Speaker, emphasized the gathering’s importance as a momentous occasion in the shared pursuit of excellence, collaboration, and cohesive synergy.
