Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the government’s unflinching commitment to confront the myriad of security challenges plaguing the nation, including the scourge of illegal oil bunkering, pipeline sabotage, piracy, unauthorised fishing, and encroachment on territorial waters.
Addressing the graduating class of the Maritime Security Unit at the Deep Blue Project’s ceremony in Elele, Rivers State, the Minister emphasized the vital role this initiative plays in safeguarding Nigeria’s vast maritime territories and ensuring the security of its waterways.
The Minister revealed that the creation and training of the Maritime Security Unit Forces is a vital component of President Tinubu’s comprehensive Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Minister admonished the graduating officers to be prepared to face off against an array of maritime threats, including illegal bunkering, pipeline destruction, piracy, unauthorised fishing, and water encroachment, among other security challenges.
With their expert training, the Minister was convinced that the graduands would play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and driving economic growth, by effectively addressing the maritime security challenges that have long plagued the nation.
The graduation ceremony represented a major breakthrough in the implementation of the Deep Blue Project, a landmark initiative designed to bolster the security and surveillance of Nigeria’s vast maritime territories.
Badaru commended the graduating Maritime Security officers for their successful completion of the training program, stating that “Your dedication and hard work have earned you this achievement, and I am proud to congratulate you on this milestone.”
He also extended his gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Maritime and Blue Economy for the Ministry’s support and collaboration in establishing the Maritime Security Unit.
“Your Ministry’s commitment to the Deep Blue Project has been instrumental in its success, and I appreciate your unwavering support.”
Furthermore, he expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their technical expertise and resources contributed to the project.
Additionally, he acknowledged the facilitators and trainers involved in the program, saying, “Your expertise and guidance have equipped these officers with the necessary skills to excel in their duties’.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence’s spokesperson, Henshaw Ogubike, the minister expressed gratitude for the graduands’ efforts, stating that their dedication to the program’s success is deeply valued.
