Ghana Mourns Bahubali: Boxer Ernest Akushey Dies After Fight

Ghana has been plunged into mourning following the death of popular boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey, who passed away just days after suffering a heavy defeat in the ring. The 27-year-old fighter reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, according to several Ghanaian media outlets. His final bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena ended in a technical knockout against Jacob Dickson, a fight that many now believe may have contributed to his untimely death.

Born and raised in James Town, Akushey trained out of the Wadada Gym, where his ferocious style earned him the nickname “Bahubali,” after the warrior hero in the popular Indian film. He was known for his strong finish and early undefeated record, but in his last fight, Dickson dominated — closing the bout in the eighth round with a TKO.

Reports say that the boxer fell ill shortly after the fight. On Monday, September 22, he began showing symptoms that worsened overnight, with family members raising concerns about internal injuries possibly sustained during the fight. Around 2 a.m. the following morning, he was pronounced dead. An autopsy has not yet been made public, and Ghanaian boxing authorities are reportedly investigating the incident.

The tragedy has prompted shock and grief on social media and within the Ghana Boxing Authority. Fans have posted tributes, remembering Bahubali’s early promise and his fearless approach in the ring. For many in the boxing community, the question now is whether safety protocols, medical checks, and post-fight care will receive renewed attention in light of this loss.

Ernest Akushey’s rise was marked by high expectations. His early six-fight unbeaten record added to the belief that he was a talent Ghana boxing could build around. His passing, so soon after the fight, has stirred concerns over how boxers are monitored closely after brutal bouts.

As supporters await official confirmation of cause of death and potential reforms from boxing authorities, the loss of “Bahubali” is being felt deeply. He was more than a boxer in his community — he was a symbol of fighting spirit. In death, his legacy may be the questions and changes his passing inspires.
