Busquets To Retire At End Of MLS Season – Era Ends

Sergio Busquets has announced he will hang up his boots at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, bringing to a close a storied career spanning two decades. Inter Miami officially confirmed the news, saying the club’s participation in the MLS playoffs will mark the final matches of his professional journey.

The Spanish midfielder revealed his decision via a video message on social media, reflecting on a career he described as “a story I always dreamed of,” and expressing gratitude to his family, former clubs, teammates, and fans. He said: “These will be my last months on the pitch. I am retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful.”

Busquets rose through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and made his senior breakthrough in 2008, going on to become one of the pillars of the club during one of its most successful eras. Over 700 appearances followed, during which he collected numerous titles including nine La Liga crowns and three UEFA Champions League trophies. On the international stage, he earned 143 caps with Spain and played key roles in the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship triumphs.

In 2023, Busquets joined Inter Miami, reuniting with former teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. During his time in the United States, he helped the club win the Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield.

His departure signals the end of an era for a player often cited as one of the greatest defensive midfielders in football history. While details of his post-playing plans remain unclear, Busquets’s legacy is firmly secure — as a tactician, leader, and quietly dominant presence on the pitch.

Fans, former colleagues, and football pundits alike will use the remaining weeks of the season to salute a career of relentless intelligence, consistency, and class.
