Antoine Griezmann has opened up about his time at Barcelona, revealing that despite media speculation about tension between him and Lionel Messi, the Argentine superstar was always supportive and encouraging behind the scenes. In a candid reflection during a recent interview, the Atlético Madrid forward dismissed long-standing rumors of conflict that surrounded his spell at Camp Nou.
“When I played at Barça, the press said Messi wasn’t happy with me,” Griezmann recalled. “He told me, ‘Antoine, calm down. It’s the press.’ He responded in matches—on the pitch, he whistled penalties and celebrated my goals as if he had scored them himself.”
Griezmann’s remarks shed new light on one of the most scrutinized relationships in modern football. When he joined Barcelona from Atlético Madrid in 2019 for €120 million, many doubted whether he and Messi could coexist effectively in attack. The pair endured a turbulent first season together, marked by inconsistent results, managerial changes, and persistent tabloid speculation that their chemistry was strained.
However, Griezmann’s comments suggest a different story—one of professionalism and quiet mutual respect. During their time together, Messi often assisted Griezmann and publicly praised his work rate. In return, the French forward frequently credited Messi’s intelligence and movement, calling him “a joy to play with.”
Despite flashes of brilliance, the combination never fully flourished under then-managers Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setién. Tactical adjustments and positional overlaps limited Griezmann’s freedom, and after Messi’s departure to PSG in 2021, the Frenchman eventually returned to Atlético Madrid on loan, later sealing a permanent move.

Since returning to the capital, Griezmann has rediscovered his best form—emerging as one of La Liga’s most complete attackers and a central figure in Diego Simeone’s system. Yet, he still reflects fondly on his time alongside Messi, insisting that the relationship was never what the media portrayed.
“I learned a lot from him—his calmness, his joy, his vision,” Griezmann said. “People will always talk, but on the pitch, everything was clear.”
The revelation highlights not only Griezmann’s maturity but also Messi’s quiet leadership—proof that football’s greatest relationships often unfold away from the headlines.
