Toni Kroos, former Real Madrid midfield maestro, has issued a sharp warning to Barcelona this week, suggesting their attractive brand of football under Hansi Flick comes with a serious price. Speaking on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos praised the Catalan side but also cautioned that their willingness to take risks could lead to disaster in the Champions League.
“Barcelona has one of the most attractive styles, if not the most attractive in all of Europe,” Kroos began, before adding, “but I think they take too many risks.” He singled out creative players like Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Raphinha, emphasizing how much Barça rely on their brilliance. On an off day for these stars, Kroos warned, “any team can hurt them and beat them — you can knock them out of the Champions League.”
Referencing last season’s dramatic semi-final defeat to Inter Milan, Kroos stressed that the risks Barcelona take at the back and the open style of play yield moments of magic — but also leave vulnerabilities. “That happened last season against Inter,” he said. Looking ahead, he predicted that this year Barça will inevitably face a team capable of exploiting those risks, especially past the 75th minute, when fatigue sets in and spaces open up.

Kroos believes that while Barcelona dominate domestically due to their offensive quality, the Champions League’s knockout rounds will question whether their risk-loving approach is sustainable against the elite. “In La Liga I don’t think so, because they are very dominant,” he noted, but in Europe, “this will happen to Barcelona … they will come up against an opponent like that that knocks them out.”
The critique isn’t dismissing Barça’s style — far from it. Kroos appreciates the beauty of possession, fluid attack, and technical players. But he insists that high-stakes matches demand adaptability: closing spaces, controlling momentum, and protecting the backline when the pressure is high. For Barcelona, this is not just preseason talk or punditry — it is a strategy test.
