A massive explosion at the Accurate Energetic Systems explosives plant in rural Tennessee on Friday left 19 people missing, and the facility largely destroyed, authorities said. The blast occurred in Bucksnort, about 50 miles west of Nashville. The Humphreys County Sheriff confirmed there is no immediate explanation for how the explosion happened, adding that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI are “handling the scene.”
In the immediate aftermath, Sheriff Chris Davis described the devastation: “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone.” He said emergency teams expect to be at the site for several days. A bomb squad and multiple federal agencies are coordinating search, recovery, and forensic efforts.
Aerial footage showed charred debris, smoldering vehicles, and the remains of what had once been buildings. The explosion was heard for miles, with residents reporting their homes shook and doors rattled in neighboring counties. First responders initially could not enter parts of the site due to ongoing detonations. Some units remained cautious for hours until the scene was deemed safe enough to bring in search teams.
Sheriff Davis stressed the gravity of the situation, referring to the missing individuals as “souls” and urging compassion for affected families. He also noted that multiple fatalities had already been confirmed, though the exact number remained unclear.

Accurate Energetic Systems operates an explosives manufacturing complex spanning roughly 1,300 acres, with multiple production buildings and a laboratory. The company produces energetic materials for defense, aerospace, and demolition markets.
The site has a troubled history. In 2014, a smaller explosion near the same plant—then under the name Rio Ammunition—claimed one life and injured three others. That incident was deemed accidental after investigation, involving shotgun cartridge loading operations. Some local officials said the 2025 expansion plans had made the facility a key local employer, heightening concern over both human loss and economic fallout.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown and investigators from ATF, the FBI, and state and local agencies are working to determine what triggered the blast—be it a mechanical failure, procedural lapse, or other factors. Officials cautioned the investigation could take several days or longer, given the scale of the destruction and hazards involved.
Communities near Bucksnort and McEwen have been asked to avoid the site to allow emergency workers free access. Authorities also encouraged residents to report any observed damage, debris, or missing persons promptly to local law enforcement.
