Mbappé Urges Critics To Leave Yamal Alone Amid Off-field Noise

Mbappé Urges Critics To Leave Yamal Alone Amid Off-field Noise

Kylian Mbappé has come to the defence of 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, suggesting that critics are focusing too heavily on the Barcelona winger’s personal life instead of his performances on the pitch. Speaking in an interview on Universo Valdano, Mbappé asked the public and media to respect Yamal’s space and allow his talent to speak louder than speculation.

“People talk a lot about his personal life, but I think people should leave him alone,” Mbappé said. He described Yamal as “a great football player, but in life he is just an 18-year-old kid.” Underlining the inevitable pressures that come with early fame, he added: “At 18, everyone makes mistakes. He’ll live his life. We should only look at what he does on the pitch. The rest isn’t important, as long as it isn’t anything serious. He has great talent and I wish him the best of luck.”

Yamal has received praise for his performances so far this season, contributing goals and assists for Barcelona. But those achievements have been shadowed by media scrutiny over his off-field behaviour and reports about his fitness, especially after he was withdrawn from Spain’s squad amid concerns over a groin issue. Mbappé, who himself broke into professional football at a young age, offered these comments perhaps reflecting his own experiences of balancing public expectation and personal growth.

The timing of these remarks is also notable as Barcelona prepare to face Real Madrid in the upcoming El Clásico — a high-profile match that inevitably increases attention on their players. Yamal, when fit, is expected to play and will likely draw close observation in front of one of Europe’s biggest football audiences.

Mbappé’s message is simple but powerful: talent should be used to judge a player, not tabloid headlines. As footballers navigate both adoration and criticism in the modern age, his call for respect adds a layer of humanity to the game — reminding fans, media, and peers alike that behind every rising star is still a young person growing, learning, and deserving of patience.
