Yamal, Williams & Mastantuono Sidelined With Pubalgia

Yamal, Williams & Mastantuono Sidelined With Pubalgia

A troubling trend is emerging in La Liga: three of Spanish football’s most promising young stars — Lamine Yamal (FC Barcelona), Nico Williams (Athletic Club) and Franco Mastantuono (Real Madrid) — are all currently wrestling with the same injury: pubalgia (commonly referred to as a “sports hernia”).

Barcelona confirmed that 18-year-old Yamal is sidelined with a recurrence of pubic discomfort, estimating a 2–3 week absence and warning his return may take longer as the issue “comes and goes”. A sports-traumatologist told Cadena SER that the injury has reduced Yamal’s ability to move and shoot by nearly 50 %.

At Athletic Club, Williams is reportedly grappling with persistent pubalgia that has hampered his explosive ability. Club medical staff are considering surgery, which could keep the winger out for around three months.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid confirmed that youngster Mastantuono has been diagnosed with pubalgia and will be out for an indefinite period, his recovery being subject to careful monitoring.

That all three stars are affected by the same injury may raise concerns about workload, management and the demands on young players in top-level football. For Yamal in particular, experts have highlighted the risk of long-term complications if the injury is not fully resolved.

For their clubs, the timing could not be more sensitive. Barcelona and Real Madrid are navigating crucial stretches in domestic and European competitions, while Athletic aim to rely on Williams’s pace and creativity as key weapons. The absence or limited capacity of any of these players can have significant ramifications.

At a personal level, each player now faces a delicate battle — not only to recover quickly, but to avoid relapse and preserve what are still blossoming careers. The injury highlights how the intensity of modern football can catch even the most talented young players off guard. As they progress through treatment and rehabilitation, the wider football community will be watching whether their clubs manage this subtle but serious injury with the caution it demands.
