Lewandowski Hat-Trick Cuts Real Madrid Lead

Lewandowski Hat-Trick Cuts Real Madrid Lead

Robert Lewandowski fired a stunning hat-trick to inspire Barcelona’s 4–2 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday, closing the gap on La Liga leaders Real Madrid to three points after Los Blancos were held to a goalless draw by Rayo Vallecano.

The 37-year-old Polish striker delivered a vintage display in Vigo, scoring twice in the first half and sealing his treble late on. Teenager Lamine Yamal also found the net as Hansi Flick’s side bounced back from a shaky run of form, including a 3–3 midweek draw with Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Lewandowski, who recently returned from injury, rediscovered his scoring touch in emphatic fashion. His 10th-minute penalty put Barcelona ahead after a handball in the box, but Celta hit back almost immediately through Sergio Carreira, who punished the champions’ high defensive line.

Despite missed chances, including a one-on-one opportunity for Marcus Rashford, Barcelona maintained pressure. Rashford, instrumental throughout, provided a pinpoint cross for Lewandowski to make it 2–1 in the 37th minute.

Celta equalized again before halftime via Borja Iglesias’s strike from the edge of the area, but Yamal restored Barca’s advantage moments before the break with a deflected shot that beat goalkeeper Ionut Radu at his near post.

The second half saw Barcelona assert more control, with Celta pinned deep in their own half. Lewandowski completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute, heading in from Rashford’s corner to secure all three points, his seventh league goal of the season in just four starts. “After the injury I can see a different Robert Lewandowski, he’s positive, he came back very early,” Flick told reporters post-match. “For him, for his confidence, it’s great to score three goals today.”

Lewandowski described the contest as “one of the craziest games of the season,” but said he was delighted with the result. “Vigo is always difficult for us, but now we’ve reduced the gap to Real Madrid,” he told Movistar.

Marcus Rashford, playing in an advanced creative role, registered two assists in one of his best performances since joining Barcelona. However, the champions ended the match with ten men after Frenkie de Jong was sent off for two late yellow cards.

Flick praised his team’s renewed energy despite missing several key players through injury, emphasizing that the club would “not change its attacking style.”

Earlier on Sunday, Real Madrid were held to a 0–0 draw at Rayo Vallecano, allowing Barcelona to close the gap at the top.
