The Fédération Algérienne de Football (FAF) is reportedly preparing an initiative to recruit Ethan Mbappé — the younger brother of France and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé — to represent Algeria at international level. At just 18, Ethan has already signed for Lille in Ligue 1 and is viewed as a promising talent with eligibility through his Algerian mother, Fayza Lamari, herself of Kabyle descent.
The move forms part of a broader strategic push by the FAF to expand its options by engaging young players of dual nationality before they become committed to other senior national teams. According to reports, Algeria’s football authorities intend to make contact after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, framing the approach through informal discussions rather than immediate selection pressure.
Ethan’s pathway appears appealing from the FAF’s perspective. While he has shown ability in France and is developing at club level, the competition for places in the French national team remains extremely tough. For Algerian football, the presence of a player bearing the Mbappé name and heritage would represent a significant cultural and sporting coup.
At this stage, the matter remains exploratory. Ethan has not publicly indicated any willingness to switch allegiance, and he continues his club career in France. Meanwhile his mother, Lamari — who also acts as his representative and adviser — is seen as a crucial figure in any potential decision-making process.

Should discussions progress, the FAF would still need to satisfy FIFA eligibility requirements, ensure the player’s commitment and align his involvement with Algeria’s long-term goals. The prospect of an Mbappé lining up alongside the “Fennecs” may seem ambitious, but Algeria believe the timing is right to make bold moves for their next generation of talent.
For now, all parties remain in a holding pattern: Ethan focuses on his development at Lille, while Algeria quietly plans their approach and hopes to open the door to one of Europe’s emerging young stars.
