WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s chief spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, is set to leave her position, according to DHS officials, as the administration’s immigration enforcement policies face a lack of public support and increasing political pressure in the wake of fatal incidents involving federal law enforcement agents.
A spokesperson for the department confirmed that the departure of McLaughlin had been scheduled since December.
But the departure comes at a time of rising controversy over the administration’s immigration policies and the activities of federal immigration agents. McLaughlin did not return a request for comment
This is happening as the department is attempting to rebalance its public outreach efforts in light of several months of protests related to enforcement operations in various cities around the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has faced criticism from members of Congress and civil rights organizations for comments that have been made on behalf of the department in light of violent incidents involving members of the immigration service, some of which have been deemed to be incomplete or inaccurate.
According to a source within the Trump administration, conservative commentator Katie Zacharia is expected to be hired as a spokesperson for DHS.
Another official, Lauren Bis, who is a deputy in the public affairs office, is expected to take the top position, the source said.
McLaughlin has been one of the most prominent voices in support of the administration’s immigration policy approach during Trump’s current presidential term.
Her work has included messaging for an agency that plays a critical role in the president’s deportation expansion initiative.
Her time at the agency has been marked by a significant increase in immigration enforcement activities, including ICE operations in major cities.
Public attitudes toward these policies have changed in recent months.
National polling in January showed a decline in support for the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, with many Americans believing that the methods of immigration enforcement had crossed a line and undermined public safety.

The shift in public opinion came after a series of confrontations between federal immigration authorities and protesters, culminating in the deadly shooting of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis during enforcement actions late last year.
The events sparked probes and further debate in Congress about federal power and the regulation of immigration enforcement.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced bipartisan criticism for first labeling the victims of the Minneapolis shootings as “domestic terrorists” before supporting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Officials in Minnesota and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle later demanded a comprehensive investigation, suggesting that findings had been prematurely drawn while reviewing evidence.
The Minneapolis shootings have since become a turning point in the national debate on immigration enforcement, leading to a fresh examination of DHS communication practices and the accuracy of initial reports.
Members of Congress have called for internal documents and testimony from DHS officials as part of ongoing oversight work.
Noem, a former governor of South Dakota, has become one of the most vocal public supporters of the administration’s policies on immigration enforcement.
During her first year at the helm of DHS, she was a regular presence at ICE enforcement actions, including trips to New York City and foreign detention centers used to house migrants who have been removed from the United States.
These appearances have been met with praise from immigration enforcement supporters and criticism from opponents who say they politicized law enforcement efforts.
Within the DHS, there have been efforts to make the departure of McLaughlin seem like a normal occurrence and not a result of disciplinary action.
This is according to statements by representatives of the agency, who said that the timeline for her departure had been set months prior to the current controversies.
However, the change in leadership is occurring against the backdrop of political pressure on the administration’s immigration policies.
The surveys that were conducted following the Minneapolis incidents showed a lack of confidence in ICE and an increasing divide along party lines in terms of immigration enforcement priorities.
Independents showed a significant decrease in their support compared to previous periods during Trump’s administration.

The administration has continued to justify its policies by stating that it has reduced crime through aggressive enforcement and improved border security, despite claims to the contrary by its critics, who argue that available data does not support a direct link between enforcement actions and crime rates.
The congressional oversight committees are also expected to continue their review of DHS activities and communications related to the Minneapolis cases in the coming weeks.
McLaughlin’s departure is also expected to happen in the near term, according to officials who are familiar with the transition.
