Armed Intruder Shot Dead After Entering Trump’s Residence

Armed Intruder Shot Dead After Entering Trump's Residence

An armed intruder was shot dead early Sunday after he attempted to enter the secure perimeter of the U.S. President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump was in Washington, D.C. The shooting was carried out by U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy.

According to reports, the intruder, identified as Austin T. Martin of Cameron, North Carolina, was armed with a shotgun and a fuel can when he tried to enter the north gate of the resort at around 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time (06:30 GMT). “The Secret Service encountered the individual as he attempted to unlawfully enter the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago early this morning,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw gave further information on the incident in a news conference, saying that the situation escalated after the suspect failed to follow commands. “The only words that we said to him was ‘drop the items,’ which means the gas can and the shotgun,” Bradshaw said. “At which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position.” The police shot the suspect to “neutralise the threat,” he added.

Bradshaw also said that the police officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras and that no police officers were injured in the incident.

The sheriff also said that it is not known if the shotgun was loaded. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into the case, including the origin of the shotgun and Martin’s path from North Carolina to Florida. Martin’s family had reported him missing on Saturday, CBS News reported.

Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s personal resort and home, is secured by several tiers of protection. The outer perimeter is secured by local sheriff’s deputies, and the Secret Service secures the inner perimeter. Other security measures include screening visitors, scanning vehicles, searching bags, metal detectors, and K9 units.

The altercation at Mar-a-Lago is part of a long history of security threats against Trump. In July 2024, Trump was shot in the ear during a public event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

This attack caused the death of one onlooker and injured two others. The gunman, 20-year-old Matthew Crooks, was instantly killed by security personnel, and no motive has been identified by authorities yet.

Later in 2024, Secret Service agents foiled another attack on Trump at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.

A man named Ryan Routh was observed carrying a hidden rifle in the bushes nearby. Routh ran away but was later arrested and, earlier this month, sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to assassinate the president.

Regarding Sunday’s attack, the authorities reported that the suspect appeared to be operating alone, and there was no immediate evidence of a connection to a larger group.

The investigation will focus on Martin’s past, his route of travel, and whether there was any planning involved prior to the attempt.

The authorities made it clear that these types of investigations typically involve forensic evidence, electronic data, and interviews with associates and relatives.

The Secret Service has been providing increased security at Mar-a-Lago since Trump’s departure in January 2021. Although the Secret Service has long been responsible for protecting former presidents and their families, the presence of private property, public access, and political notoriety creates a complex situation.

The Secret Service has implemented a multi-layered system to intercept threats before they reach the residence or its guests.

There has been no further information released about Martin’s intentions, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are working together to uncover how the suspect obtained the firearm, whether it was functional, and other security failures that may have contributed to the attack.

Trump was not present at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident and was said to be in Washington for other events. It was reported that the former president’s absence did not affect the operational procedure in response to the perimeter breach, which involved a possible armed assailant.

The deadly shooting incident highlights the risks that high-profile political leaders face in the United States, especially former presidents who are actively involved in politics and have private residences with social and political purposes. The case will be handled under federal and local supervision.
