Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 3–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, thanks to a brace from Vinícius Júnior and a late goal from Kylian Mbappé, in a match that swung decisively after the visitors were reduced to ten men. The win lifted Real to the top of La Liga with 21 points, two ahead of Barcelona.
The first half was cagey, with both teams probing but failing to take control. Real’s Aurélien Tchouaméni saw his headed attempt drift just wide, and Mbappé exploited a loose Villarreal pass to tee up Franco Mastantuono, whose shot was deflected harmlessly off Renato Veiga. Meanwhile, Villarreal had their own opportunity when Tani Oluwaseyi broke in one-on-one against Thibaut Courtois, only for the Madrid keeper to pull off a sprawling save.
Shortly after the break, Real broke through. Vinícius picked up the ball near the left byline, drove into the box, and squeezed home a shot from a tight angle — the effort deflected off Villarreal captain Santi Comesaña and wrong-footed goalkeeper Arnau Tenas.

In the 69th minute, Vinícius doubled his tally by converting a penalty after being fouled by Rafa Marín near the byline. He tucked the ball just beneath Tenas to make it 2–0. But Villarreal struck back only four minutes later when Georges Mikautadze unleashed a low strike from the edge of the box, beating Courtois and halving the deficit.
Tension spilled over in the 77th minute, when Santiago Mourino received a second yellow for a foul on Vinícius and was sent off, reducing Villarreal to ten men. Real seized the opportunity nine minutes from time as Mbappé combined with Brahim Díaz and slotted home to wrap up the victory.
Notably, Mbappé appeared to aggravate an ankle injury after scoring. Moments after his goal, he sat down clutching his ankle before walking off unassisted and disappearing down the tunnel. For this match, he had ceded the penalty to Vinícius, who was Real’s designated taker.
This result gives Xabi Alonso’s side the top spot in the league, setting up pressure on Barcelona ahead of their trip to Sevilla on Sunday. Villarreal, meanwhile, remain third with 16 points.
