Judges of Nigeria’s Federal High Court will close for their annual Christmas recess on December 19 and are scheduled to resume full judicial duties on January 7, 2026.
The Federal High Court of Nigeria has announced that it will commence its annual Christmas vacation on Friday, December 19, 2025, with full judicial activities set to resume on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The schedule was confirmed in an official statement issued by Catherine Oby Christopher, the Court’s Director of Information.
The Christmas break is part of the court’s yearly calendar and is conducted in line with the provisions of Order 46, Rule 4(c) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules. This rule outlines the mandatory vacation periods for judges across the court’s divisions nationwide, ensuring consistency in the judicial calendar and allowing judges time for rest and administrative duties.
During the holiday period, courtrooms across the country will suspend regular hearings, though arrangements are typically made for judges to address urgent matters. In previous years, the Federal High Court has designated specific judges to handle cases considered time-sensitive, such as fundamental rights applications or matters requiring immediate judicial intervention. While the latest directive did not specify duty judges, similar procedures are expected to be followed to prevent disruptions to essential legal processes.

The Federal High Court plays a pivotal role within Nigeria’s judicial system, handling cases involving federal agencies, taxation, customs, banking, terrorism, immigration, and other matters under federal jurisdiction. Due to the court’s strategic position, its annual schedule is closely monitored by legal practitioners, government institutions, and businesses whose cases depend on uninterrupted judicial timelines.
The forthcoming recess aligns with Nigeria’s broader end-of-year slowdown, during which many public institutions operate with reduced activity. Legal professionals often use the period to prepare filings, organize case strategies, and review ongoing matters ahead of the new legal year in January.
Court officials emphasized that the vacation is a standard administrative procedure designed to maintain an orderly workflow and ensure that judges return refreshed for the demanding caseload that awaits them in the new year. The early announcement also provides clarity for litigants, lawyers, and the general public, enabling them to plan appropriately around the adjusted judicial timetable.
As the court is scheduled to reopen on January 7, 2026, normal operations are expected to resume immediately, including hearings, filings, and other judicial services across all Federal High Court divisions.
