Nations 42 Secured Places At The 2026 World Cup So Far Update

Forty-two nations have clinched their 2026 World Cup berths, with six remaining places to be settled in regional and global playoffs early next year.

The race toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached a decisive stage, with 42 national teams already securing their places at the expanded tournament. The competition, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to feature 48 teams for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The qualifying campaign has delivered intense battles across every football confederation, as nations competed for limited automatic slots while others prepared for tense playoff routes still to come.

North America’s three hosts — the United States, Mexico, and Canada — were granted automatic qualification under FIFA rules. CONCACAF is expected to add three more teams from its upcoming final qualification round.

Europe has produced the largest contingent so far, with 12 countries advancing from UEFA’s qualifiers. Austria, Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland have all secured their places. Four additional European teams will join them through a 16-team playoff in March 2026 involving group runners-up and top performers from the UEFA Nations League.

South America’s qualification cycle delivered a full slate of representatives, with Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela all booking their spots from the CONMEBOL group.

Africa completed its allocation with nine teams qualifying: Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia. The continent will also be represented in the inter-confederation playoffs, where DR Congo will compete for a final berth.

From Asia, eight teams have secured direct tickets: Australia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Uzbekistan. Asia could still add one more nation via the March playoff route.

Oceania will have one representative at the tournament after New Zealand claimed the region’s sole automatic berth. New Caledonia will enter the inter-confederation playoff stage for another possible slot.

Six places remain unclaimed and will be decided through two playoff paths: Europe’s four-team allocation, and a six-nation inter-confederation mini-tournament featuring teams from CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL, OFC, and CONCACAF.

The final lineup will be confirmed ahead of the official World Cup draw on December 5, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across 16 host cities in North America.
