The English Football Association is waiting to know the extent of Lauren James’ suspension, which will be determined by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee. This follows the red card issued to the forward during the match against Nigeria.
Lauren James was shown a red card for engaging in violent conduct by intentionally stepping on Michelle Alozie’s back, who adeptly dispossessed her.
Overwhelmed by frustration due to being effectively contained and closely marked by Halimatu Ayinde throughout the match, the 21-year-old player resorted to stepping on Alozie’s back after losing possession of the ball.
Following a thorough review by the video assistant referee (VAR), she was sanctioned with a red card.
Regrettably, Nigeria’s World Cup campaign ended in disappointment as they were eliminated, falling 4-2 in the penalty shootout to the Lionesses of England.
England released a statement: ‘Lauren is really sorry for her actions which led to the red card and is full of remorse. It is wholly out of character for her.’

‘We will be supporting Lauren throughout and will be putting forward representation on her behalf. We fully respect FIFA’s disciplinary process and will not be making any further comment until after any decision has been made.’
Her impressive tournament journey, highlighted by three goals and three assists, is marred by the red card resulting from the challenge. As a consequence, James will be sidelined for the quarter-finals, and the possibility of an extended suspension looms pending FIFA’s disciplinary evaluation.
The timeline for FIFA’s decision remains uncertain, with the possibility of an elongation to her initial one-game ban. This extension could potentially render her unavailable for the tournament’s entirety, including a potential final match for England.
In the preliminary stages of the tournament, Deborah Abiodun, representing Nigeria, served a three-match suspension after being shown a red card during the Super Falcons’ first group-stage fixture—a match that ended in a goalless draw against the Olympic champions, Canada.
Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie, who plays for Houston Dash in the US, offered her respect to James and tweeted: ‘We are playing on the world’s stage.’
‘This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James.’
Reacting to the tweet, England’s forward Lauren James took the opportunity to apologize for her hasty challenge.
She wrote: ‘All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also, for our England fans and my teammates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour, and I promise to learn from my experience.’
After the game, England boss Sarina Wiegman said: ‘She is inexperienced on this stage and in a split-second lost her emotions. It isn’t something she did on purpose. She apologised and felt really bad.’
‘She would never want to hurt someone. She is the sweetest person I know.’
