The body of a woman in her 20s was found this week near a Massachusetts wastewater treatment site, a death authorities have described as “criminal in nature.”

Police discovered the body early Monday morning in the town of Athol, about 70 miles northwest of Boston, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

The woman was described as white, but her name and cause of death have not been released. Authorities said they would share more information once an autopsy has been conducted.

Her body was found near the entrance of the town’s wastewater treatment plant, which is also near a camp where several homeless men reportedly live, according to CBS affiliate WBZ.

“It’s crazy. I come down here all the time and have some beers with some friends but I never thought this would happen here ever,” a woman identified as Missi LeClaire told the station.

The Athol Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are jointly investigating the incident.
