Heavy Downpour Kills 2, Destroys 30 Houses In Katsina State

Two women were left dead and over 30 houses were reportedly destroyed as a result of heavy rainstorm that occured on Saturday in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

According to an information officer at the council area whose name was given as Abdulkarim Sani, one of the women died when the walls of her building collapsed and fell upon her. The deceased, he revealed that had since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Sani also pointed out that Nasarawa and Matsiga communities were the worst-hit by the rainstorm which fell at different intervals between Saturday and Sunday.

Local authorities were still trying to determine the extent of damage to humans, homes and farmlands as at time of this report.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were yet to issue any statement or respond to inquiries on the incident.

In a related development, no fewer than 50 houses and other properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by rainstorms in communities in Qur’an pan Local Government Area of Plateau State.

According to residents who spoke to journalists, the rainstorm, which started Sunday night and lasted till the early hours of Monday, was accompanied by a heavy windstorm that blew off roofs of several houses and rendered many families homeless.

The Chairman of the council, Hon. Abdulmalik Yusuf Haruna, in a statement signed by his Senior Assistant on Media, Mr. Mathias Yengoet Dajan, said that the management and residents of Quaan-Pan Local Government Area are devastated by the level of destruction.

The statement added that the chairman has personally gone round some of the affected structures to ascertain the level of damage and has sympathised with the victims, admonishing them to accept the incident as an act of God.

Haruna assured the people that the Local Government Authority will take the necessary steps to attract support from government agencies and private hands to rebuild the affected communities.
