Governor Nyesom Wike who is the Rivers State Governor has announced that he has finally set up a task force which would be coordinating the distribution of relief materials to some of the communities which have been affected by flood in the state.

The relief materials as slated down are also for some of the flood victims in Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Areas of the State.

And some of the members of the task force have also been billed to meet with the governor on Thursday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The governor also approved the sum of ₦1bilion for the relief materials to the affected communities.

While empathizing with victims of the flood the governor said the approved fund is for vulnerable families “particularly in Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local government areas, which are the most impacted areas in the State, to cope with the devastating flood water which has inundated homes, farmlands and forced residents of affected communities to relocate to safer places”.

Dr. George Nwaeke who is the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Bureau (SSB) in the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, has been nominated to be the chairman of the Taskforce, while, for Commissioner for Social Welfare and Inime Aguma, is the Secretary.

In another related report, a group which has been identified as Save the Children has confirmed that the 2022 floods in Nigeria claimed over 300 people in multiple states as of September.

The leading UK-based humanitarian organisation has disclosed that about 75 people died in neighbouring Niger Republic.

The body evaluates that more than 150,000 people, of which about half are children, have been affected by floods in both countries.

The torrential rain in southern Niger and northern Nigeria has caused severe damage to livelihoods, homes, crops and livestock.

The flooding has destroyed several communities along the Niger-Nigeria border, washed away, or ruined approximately 14,500 homes.
