I Am Worried About Possible Outcome Of 2023 Election – Jega

Prof. Attahiru Jega who is a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has raised fresh fears over the current developments in the political space in the country.

Jega stated that he has palpable fears about the outcome of the 2023 general elections.

He made this known while speaking at a colloquium organised by the Electoral Hub in Abuja on Wednesday.

Jega, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria will pull through the current challenges.

I have a lot of fears about the outcome of the election. But you will see people like me are what I’ll call an incurable optimist about the future of our country.

‘So I remain hopeful that in spite of the recklessness that we see, the vandalism that we see perpetrated by many of our so-called leading politicians, we are hopeful that people will mobilise and become effectively engaged in the electoral process, so that we have a good outcome in 2023,’ Jega said.

Meanwhile, in the face of multiple allegations of underage voter registrations which have been discovered ahead of the 2023 elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its assurance to the Nigerian people that citizens who have yet to attain the legal voting age will not be allowed to vote during the elections.

Mr. Victor Aluko who is the Director of Voter Education and Publicity of the commission explained this during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday which was monitored by Africa Today News, New York.

‘I assure you that the register will be cleaned up completely and no underage voter will vote in 2023. After we finish with the claims and objections on Friday, we will be taking in again for further claims based on the complaints of the people,’ he said.

‘That is why it is important that persons who noticed any issues at all with the register should complain through the right channels where they can be documented.’

Aluko went further to disclose that after collating the complaints, INEC’s revision officers at various levels could work on them.
