Otedola Bridge Tragedy: Tanker Accident Claims Hawker's Life

Amidst a dreadful traffic snarl-up, a horrifying auto crash occurred on Saturday at Otedola Bridge, involving a tanker, a truck, and three vehicles, resulting in the tragic death of a highway egg hawker along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Precisely three days ago, on Thursday, a disturbing multiple auto crash occurred at Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A truck, tanker, and commercial bus were involved, resulting in injuries sustained by two individuals in the early morning hours.

According to available information, the accident took place around 3:20 pm and caused injuries to a number of people.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), provided a response upon arriving at the scene of the incident.

It was revealed that a fully loaded tanker carrying 60,000 liters of diesel had unfortunately crushed a female pedestrian—an egg hawker—on Otedola Bridge, heading towards Berger.

‘Further Investigation conducted by the LRT revealed that the articulated truck with registration number GME 483XD suffered a mechanical fault (brake failure) and rammed into other ongoing vehicles (Suzuki with registration number EPE_302HR and a Toyota Camry reg number MUS242HM, Avalolon AYE 453SF) damaging the three vehicles in the process.’

‘The LRT, alongside Nigeria Police, Lagos State Ambulances Service, LASAMBUS, Federal Road Safety Corps, FSC, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA officials, Rapid Response Squad, RRS, were on the ground to ensure the security of lives and property, as well as maintenance of law and order in the axis.’

Consequently, Toriola called for forbearance and understanding on the part of motorists as the construction is ‘geared towards a better transportation system and improved economic activity.’

Once the affected vehicles were cleared away, the flow of traffic was restored, and the access roads were reopened.

The gridlock along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway persisted, leaving motorists and other road users in a state of anguish due to the ongoing reconstruction efforts by the Federal Government, resulting in serious hardship for citizens.

With motorists’ concerns in mind, Engr. Gbolahan Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, has assured the public that several LASTMA personnel will be stationed in the area. Their presence aims to ensure the uninterrupted movement of traffic and prevent a total standstill scenario.
