How Tottenham Beat 9-Man Liverpool In EPL Encounter

London side, Tottenham earned three points in a dramatic style on Saturday as an own goal by Joel Matip – the last six minutes of added time – finally sunk Liverpool.

The visitors had shown great resolve to frustrate the hosts after going down to nine men when Diogo Jota was sent off in the 69th minute for a second booking, following Curtis Jones’s first-half red.

Earlier, Cody Gakpo had equalised after Son Heung-min’s excellent opener in an entertaining match that was sadly subdued by the red cards.

Liverpool were so close to a remarkable draw, but in the end, their nine men were thwarted. There were just 30 seconds left on the clock and Spurs looked set to be deeply disappointed. But Matip’s own goal means Spurs take the three points.

Speaking on the win, Spurs Manager Ange Postecoglou said, “There was a fair bit going on and I’m trying to process it. We did it late which always adds that little bit of spirit and belief, and against a top side. It’s important we take that forward.

“We did not handle it too well when they went down to 10, we started to rush it. The reality is Liverpool’s game does not change when they lose men. We probably didn’t carve out our attacks but the goals came from one of the times we flashed the ball across the box.

“This very new, young group of lads, we are just in our infancy, we are crawling before we can walk, but they were outstanding today.”
