UK Defense Secretary confirms Charles wants Andrew’s last honorary military rank revoked, escalating fallout from Epstein scandal and royal disgrace.
The British government has begun steps to remove the final honorary military title held by Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following a request from King Charles, Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed on Sunday November 2, 2025. The move further distances the King’s younger brother from official public life after years of controversy.
Andrew, 64, who held the rank of Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy, was allowed to retain that position even after relinquishing his other military titles and public duties in 2022. That decision came amid mounting pressure over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — an association which has irreparably damaged Andrew’s public standing.
“The King has indicated that’s what he wishes,” Healey told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. “This is a move that is right, and we are working on that at the moment.”

It marks the latest step in a wider push by the monarch to strip Andrew of all remaining formal roles and privileges. The former prince, once celebrated for his military career, has spiraled into public disgrace in recent years. His 22-year naval career included a high-profile role as a helicopter pilot during the 1982 Falklands War, as well as command of the minehunter vessel HMS Cottesmore.
Last week, Andrew was removed from his final royal titles, months after pressure from both political and public spheres intensified over his alleged misconduct. He has repeatedly denied all allegations of sexual abuse, including those raised in a civil lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, who accused Andrew of assaulting her when she was a minor. The case was settled out of court in 2022, with no admission of guilt.
Royal commentator Valentine Low described the impending loss of Andrew’s last military title as a “blow” for a man deeply tied to his service identity. “Royals, and particularly Andrew, are very proud and determined to hang on to military titles,” Low told the BBC. “It seems the King is intent on taking absolutely everything away from his brother.”
Andrew has already forfeited prestigious roles including Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and several honorary overseas commands. The latest development underlines King Charles’s determination to protect the monarchy’s reputation, even at personal cost.
