Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a U.S. congresswoman from New Jersey and former Navy helicopter pilot, has been elected governor of New Jersey, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli in one of the most closely watched state contests of the year.
With nearly all votes counted, Sherrill secured victory late Tuesday night, succeeding fellow Democrat Governor Phil Murphy, who completed two terms. Her win cements Democratic control in a state that has not elected a Republican governor since 2018.
Celebrating before a cheering crowd at her victory rally in Newark, Sherrill promised to govern inclusively and focus on easing economic pressures for working families. ‘’ know these are tough times. I know not everyone voted for me — but I’m working for everyone,” she said. “We’re going to follow Lady Liberty’s beacon. We’re not going to give in to our darker impulses.”
She added that her election sends a message about defending democratic values: ‘’Here in New Jersey, we know that this nation has never been, nor will it ever be, ruled by kings. We take oaths to a Constitution, not a king.”

The governor’s race drew national attention as a barometer of public sentiment toward President Donald Trump’s influence on the Republican Party. Ciattarelli, a businessman and former state lawmaker, campaigned with Trump’s endorsement, focusing on lowering taxes and revising the state’s school funding formula.
Sherrill, by contrast, proposed targeted tax incentives for new housing developments, a freeze on utility rate hikes, and expanded childcare access, policies aimed at combating New Jersey’s high cost of living.
Polling had shown the two candidates neck and neck in the weeks leading up to the November 4 election.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and former federal prosecutor, Sherrill entered politics in 2018 amid a wave of anti-Trump sentiment that swept Democrats into Congress. She quickly gained national recognition for her moderate tone and emphasis on public service.
Her gubernatorial win comes alongside other high-profile Democratic victories, including Abigail Spanberger’s win in Virginia and Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor, further signaling voter support for center-left candidates in key races across the country.
