Police activity intensified near the home of missing Arizona resident Nancy Guthrie as investigators pursued what authorities described as an active lead in the case. The development comes nearly two weeks after the 84-year-old disappeared from her residence in Tucson in what law enforcement officials believe was an abduction.
Deputies and specialised units were seen operating at a property roughly two miles from Guthrie’s home, with multiple marked and unmarked vehicles in the area. A sheriff’s vehicle blocked access to the road as officers entered and exited the residence. Authorities have not confirmed whether the activity resulted in a search warrant, arrest or recovery of evidence, but described the operation as connected to the ongoing investigation.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed in a public statement that “law enforcement activity” was under way related to the Guthrie case, without elaborating on specifics. Sheriff Chris Nanos told local media that investigators were “actively working a lead,” signalling that authorities believe the case may be moving into a more focused stage.

Nancy Guthrie, who is the mother of US television news anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing after she vanished overnight from her Tucson home. Authorities have said there are signs she was taken against her will. Investigators previously disclosed that DNA evidence recovered at the residence did not match Guthrie or anyone known to be close to her, raising concerns that an unknown individual had been present.
Law enforcement officials have emphasised that all collected evidence has been submitted for laboratory analysis. They have also clarified that reports suggesting a glove was discovered inside Guthrie’s home are inaccurate. However, several gloves were recovered in the broader area, with the closest located about two miles from her residence. Investigators have not said whether those items are directly linked to the suspect but confirmed they are part of the evidence under examination.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the case, providing additional resources and issuing a public description of a suspect. According to the FBI, the individual is described as a male standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches (approximately 175–177 centimetres) with an average build. Authorities were able to identify certain characteristics after analysing footage captured by a doorbell camera outside Guthrie’s home.
In that footage, the suspect was seen wearing a 25-litre Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack, investigators said. After the description and video details were made public, authorities reported receiving more than 13,000 tips, including approximately 4,000 within a 24-hour period. Officials say each tip is being reviewed and assessed for credibility.
The FBI has increased the reward for information leading to Guthrie’s safe return or the arrest of a suspect from $50,000 to $100,000. Law enforcement agencies say the suspect description remains a primary focus, but they are not ruling out other possibilities as the investigation continues.
Authorities have also appealed to residents in the surrounding neighbourhood to review and submit any surveillance or doorbell camera footage from the night of Guthrie’s disappearance. Detectives are particularly interested in video that may show unusual activity, vehicles or individuals moving through the area during the relevant timeframe.
Police have stressed that Guthrie requires daily medication and has limited mobility, heightening concerns for her wellbeing. Investigators believe time remains a critical factor in the search effort.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have issued emotional public appeals asking for information about their mother’s whereabouts. In social media messages, the family has urged anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward, expressing hope that she is still alive. They have indicated they would be willing to pay for her safe return.

Search operations have involved local law enforcement, federal agents and specialised response teams, including forensic units and tactical officers. The visible police presence near the new residence suggests authorities may be narrowing their focus as they analyse physical evidence and digital leads.
Despite the increased activity, officials caution that investigations of this nature can take time. They have not confirmed whether the recent operation produced arrests or significant breakthroughs. Law enforcement continues to ask members of the public to share credible information through official channels rather than speculate online.
As the search enters its third week, investigators maintain that the case remains active and ongoing. Authorities say they are committed to following every viable lead until Nancy Guthrie is located and those responsible are identified.
