LONDON — Thomas Tuchel has signed a contract extension to remain manager of the England men’s national football team through to the conclusion of the 2028 UEFA European Championship, the Football Association confirmed on Thursday.
The new deal keeps the German coach in charge well beyond the 2026 World Cup in North America, and provides continuity as England prepare to co-host Euro 2028 alongside Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Tuchel, 52, was initially appointed head coach in late 2024, succeeding Gareth Southgate, with a contract originally set to expire at the end of the 2026 World Cup. The extension now formally secures his role for an additional two years.
In a statement, Tuchel expressed satisfaction with the agreement. “I am very happy and proud to extend my stay with the England national team,” he said. “Leading this squad through two major tournaments is an incredible opportunity, and I will continue to work to make the players, staff, and supporters proud.”
The Football Association said the extension would provide “clarity and full focus” on the team’s objectives for the 2026 World Cup and ensure stability in the coaching structure as England build toward Euro 2028. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham emphasized Tuchel’s experience and leadership qualities. “Thomas has shown an ability to unify the squad and implement tactical approaches that are competitive at the highest international level,” Bullingham said. “He is the right person to lead England through these crucial years.”

Tuchel’s backroom staff, including assistant coach Anthony Barry, goalkeeping coach Henrique Hilário, and other key personnel, have also agreed extensions, ensuring that the technical team remains consistent throughout the period. The FA described the decision as part of a long-term strategy to maintain continuity and minimise disruption to player development and tactical preparation.
Since his appointment, Tuchel has overseen a marked improvement in England’s competitive record. The team completed an unbeaten qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup, winning all eight matches without conceding a goal. Friendly matches have provided an opportunity to experiment with attacking and defensive systems, and the team has benefited from the integration of emerging talents alongside experienced internationals. Analysts note that Tuchel’s tactical flexibility — including formations designed to maximize wing play and pressing intensity — has contributed to England’s improved performance metrics compared with previous cycles.
Tuchel’s managerial career spans several top European clubs. He won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and secured domestic league titles with Paris Saint-Germain in France and Bayern Munich in Germany. His experience at elite clubs, particularly in European competitions, has been cited by the FA as a key factor in his selection for a long-term international role. His familiarity with managing high-pressure tournaments and large squads positions him to lead England through multiple competitive cycles.
The extension also underscores England’s strategic planning for major tournaments. Euro 2028 will be the first European Championship hosted partially in England since 1996, and the FA views continuity in management as a cornerstone for achieving competitive success on home soil. Officials have emphasized that long-term leadership is intended to support both tactical consistency and player development ahead of the tournament.
Tuchel’s approach with England has involved blending experienced players with emerging stars, creating a balance designed to optimize both short-term results and long-term squad cohesion. Observers have highlighted his emphasis on possession control, structured defensive organization, and versatile attacking options, which can be adapted to counter different opponents in tournament settings. Analysts have also noted improvements in England’s set-piece efficiency and transitional play since his arrival.
The new contract effectively rules out speculation linking Tuchel to potential club positions in Europe. Reports in late 2025 suggested that top Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, were monitoring Tuchel’s availability. By extending his international role early, the FA has removed uncertainty surrounding the national team’s leadership and reinforced a focus on tournament preparation rather than managerial distraction.
England’s next key milestone will be the World Cup group stage draw, followed by pre-tournament friendlies and training camps. Performance in the 2026 tournament will be a significant measure of Tuchel’s effectiveness, but the FA has framed the contract extension as a long-term investment in stability and strategic planning through to Euro 2028.

International observers have praised the FA’s approach in securing Tuchel, noting that managerial turnover in men’s national teams is often rapid and can undermine team cohesion. By committing to a four-year extension, the FA has aligned England with other nations that maintain managerial consistency to achieve both competitive and developmental objectives.
The timing of the contract extension also allows Tuchel to continue implementing his long-term vision for the squad, including further integration of youth players, refinement of tactical systems, and preparation for high-intensity matches at major tournaments. FA officials indicated that Tuchel’s leadership will remain central to England’s efforts to contend for top honours on the global stage, including the World Cup and the European Championship.
Tuchel’s previous contract was set to end after the 2026 World Cup; the new deal secures his position through Euro 2028. This guarantees leadership continuity during one of the most significant periods for the national team in over three decades.
