International Day of Democracy

As the world marks international day of democracy, Nigeria is marking international day of demoCRAZY (in Fela’s voice).

In a country ruled by a former dictator who was packaged as a “converted democrat” and foisted down on the people, all the tenets of democracy and rule of law which is the beauty of democracy have been bastardized. We practically have just one arm of government in Nigeria today which is the “Presidency”

In our own democracy, the military and other security agencies still kill, brutalize and detain people indiscriminately. The press is gagged in such a way that anyone who says the truth about the current reality in the country is hounded.

In Buhari’s Nigeria democracy, Boko Haram, herdsmen and bandits slaughter people on daily basis, while the government keeps mum. Nigeria today is the third most terrorized nation in the world and Somalia has dropped to sixth. The number of people who die in our “peaceful democracy” monthly is much more than the ones who die in war torn countries.

Nigeria indeed deserve Buhari’s kind of democracy, as they saw Goodluck Jonathan who did everything within his power to enthrone democracy in Nigeria as “weak and incompetent”. Let us all enjoy the “hard man” that we all wanted, who had the magic wand to solve our problems.

Happy INTERNATIONAL DEMOCRAZY DAY Nigerians.
