UEFA Removes ‘Europa’ From Conference League Name

European football body, UEFA has announced its decision to shorten the name of its third-tier competition from ‘Europa Conference League’ to ‘Conference League’ for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Africa Today News, New York reports that the 2024 and 2025 finals will be held in Athens and Wroclaw respectively, while Lisbon will host the 2025 Women’s Champions League final at Sporting’s Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The new Agia Sofia Stadium, home of AEK Athens, will be observed by UEFA officials until this November before confirming the 2024 final there.

In another report, UEFA on Wednesday, announced changes to their Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The new regulations will stop Chelsea’s extravagant expenditures from happening again.

After the Juventus affair, a more thorough examination of capital gains will be necessary.

Other topics on the agenda included rebranding the Europa Conference League to the Conference League and making changes to several competitions.

UEFA has introduced a limit of five years, even if the contract is longer, in a bid to stop Chelsea’s tactic of signing new squad members to very long contracts to enable them spread the amortisation.

FFP is also changing the squad cost ratio, so that a club’s spending on salaries, transfers and commissions cannot go beyond 70% of the club’s revenue.

That will only be in full swing by 2025/2026 season, as it will be introduced gradually starting at 90% in 2023/2024 and 80% in 2024/2025.

UEFA has also urged clubs to stick to “international accounting principles” while calculating capital gains.

This comes after Juventus were deducted 10 points in Serie A for artificially inflating transfer fees to boost capital gains.
