Palestinian Threats Keep Israeli Forces On High Alert

In lieu of some recent threats which were made to them by the Palestinians, the Israeli forces have been placed on high alert near the Gaza Strip on Tuesday over massive fears of the escalation following the killing of a Palestinian man.

Local media had also reported that an Islamic Jihad leader had also arrested in the West Bank overnight.

All the roads near the Palestinian enclave had also been reportedly blocked and the train service in the southern city of Ashkelon also suspended following fear of possible anti-tank, rocket or sniper fires from Gaza. Activities in local Israeli schools and colleges were cancelled.

The Erez Crossing, the only pedestrian passage between Gaza and Israel, was also temporarily shut down.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s office announced in a statement that Lapid called a special security assessment meeting with Defense Minister Benny Gantz and other senior military and security officials.

At least one Palestinian was killed and another was injured during a raid by Israeli forces in the northern West Bank city of Jenin overnight, the Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the incident.

The Palestinian worker had been shot dead by Israeli forces on Sunday while crossing a security barrier in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian sources said.

Nabil Ghanem, 53, of the West Bank city of Nablus, was identified as the man killed by the Palestinian health ministry.

Ghanem is one of the tens of thousands of West Bank Palestinians who seek work in Israel on a regular basis, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Forces shot at a suspect who vandalised the security fence,’ according to an Israeli army official.

Wages on Israeli farms and building sites are significantly greater than those paid by most Palestinian employers in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
